The Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ) is an activist and progressive economic policy think tank based in Johannesburg, South Africa. The IEJ addresses the challenges posed by extreme levels of poverty, inequality, and unemployment. In many contexts, the policies adopted to address these problems are inadequate and based on ideas and research that do not respond to the concerns of labor, community activism, civil society, and progressive politics. There is a need to integrate economic research and policy proposals with progressive social forces to effect social consensus and systemic change towards political structures fostering social justice and participation in political processes. The IEJ presents rigorous, accessible research and policy alternatives for a more just economy and society in South Africa, the African Continent, and the Global South.
The Robert Bosch Stiftung supports the IEJ in its organizational development process, providing resources to strengthen the organizational capacity. The assumption is that as a strengthened organization, the IEJ can work effectively towards achieving the goal of addressing inequalities and contributing to a just society where an equitable distribution of resources, the democratization of economic decision making, and systemic change are secured and entrenched for the realization of rights and planetary wellbeing.
