Our world is trying to reach "net-zero" emissions, which means we want to balance the amount of greenhouse gases we release with the amount we remove from the atmosphere. One way to do this is by using land to plant trees, restore ecosystems, and trade carbon credits. However, these efforts can create a high demand for land, impacting local communities and Indigenous Peoples who already live on that land.
This new resource presents key insights into how our climate goals are changing the way land is used worldwide. It shows that when we try to solve climate change with land-based projects, it can put pressure on communities with weak land rights, putting them and the environment at risk. Securing land rights is therefore essential for making climate action fair, effective, and inclusive.
At this event, we’ll launch the publication and discuss how to make climate action fairer. We'll hear stories, expert opinions, and have a panel discussion exploring how climate action can respect land rights and human rights.
Please note that this event will be held in English, but live translation to German will be available.
