In brief

About the project

War defines everyday life in Ukraine. Broken windows, soldiers, destroyed streets. These are just a few of the images we associate with the war in Ukraine. The aim of the “Documenting Ukraine” project is to capture daily life in a war zone. Scientists, journalists, artists, intellectuals and archivists can tell and process the war from their personal perspective. Whether with a camera, as a novel or with sound recordings: all forms of documentations are developed and realized by people on the ground. The collected documents reflect Ukrainian culture and contribute to the preservation of Ukraine's cultural heritage. In addition, the works help to make the current situation accessible to the public. The war in Ukraine, which for many is distant and abstract, can thus be experienced beyond the borders of Ukraine and for posterity. At the same time, a scientific archive is being set up in which the collected works will be stored and made accessible across different disciplines. The research project was initiated by the Institute for Human Sciences (Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen, IWM) in March 2022.
