Decolonising Digital Rights

Digitality encompasses every area of our lives, which makes it more important to deal with digital rights. The project shows how the digital field is linked to various social components in an intersectional context, such as gender, ethnicity, environment, sexual orientation, migration and economic factors. Digital rights are seen as fundamental rights for everyone that must be protected. This project is part of Tech & Inequality Portfolio, where we have explored the intersection of tech, discrimination, and power dynamics, between 2020 and 2024.
 

Digital transformation refers to the increasing intertwining of digital and physical spheres. These can manifest themselves in companies, digital platforms, clouds, artificial intelligence and much more. There is therefore a need for constant monitoring of fundamental rights principles. Using an intersectional approach, the project aims to uncover racism, discrimination mechanisms and exclusion that often occur in the online world. It is intended to help drive a rethink and lead to a digital transformation and bring persons that focus on this question together.

The decolonizing journey developed in a participatory process involving a variety of actors. The process extended over a period of 3 years during which different ideas, goals, a definition and new directions in the area of "tech" and digital rights were collected. In spring 2024, DFF officially launched the Weaving Liberation Initiative, which will embody the continuity of this process in a more formalized way in the future.

The project is aimed at marginalized groups that are affected by digital inequality. It is also aimed at companies that are interested in digital transformation, as well as politicians, who should view digital rights as a fundamental right. The overall aim is to promote a fair approach to digital rights and raise general awareness of the use of sensitive data.
