About the Project

The European Fund for the Balkans (EFB) is a joint initiative of the Robert Bosch Stiftung, ERSTE Foundation, and the King Baudouin Foundation, launched in 2007 and embedded within the Network of European Foundations (NEF).

The EFB envisions a Western Balkans where nations flourish as vibrant, peaceful democracies aligned with liberal values and integrated into the European Union. Its mission focuses on:
•    Strengthening democracy and peace.
•    Encouraging regional cooperation and solidarity.
•    Promoting European integration while addressing Europe's emerging challenges.

Key Initiatives and Networks

The EFB contributes to sustainable change through innovative programs and networks:

Balkans in Europe Policy Advisory Group (BiEPAG)
Established with the University of Graz, BiEPAG unites policy analysts, scholars, and researchers from the Balkans and the EU. The group generates high-quality policy recommendations, engages in high-level debates, and addresses regional challenges through expert-driven analysis and advocacy.

Engaged Democracy Initiative (EDI)
EDI is a transformative regional network of grassroots movements, journalists, researchers, and civic leaders. With five thematic areas—environment, civic rights, decent work, public space, and media communication—EDI provides infrastructure for regional collaboration, offering tools like conventions, thematic meetings, micro-grants (Response Hub), study visits, and a secure digital platform (Engaged Balkans)

beeEFB Alumni Network
Launched in 2021, this network connects nearly 500 alumni, fostering collaboration among changemakers and young leaders. Programs like BeeEffect provide mentoring opportunities to emerging leaders, reinforcing their role in strengthening democracy and regional solidarity.

"Bridging Divides" (working title) program
The program is supported by the Robert Bosch Stiftung GmbH. It starts in 2025 with an inclusive design and development phase. Overall, the program aims at transcending ethnic boundaries and addressing political polarization in the Balkans. It will support actors engaged in constructive dialogue and conflict resolution with a demand-driven approach.
