German School Award 2023: Jury visits 20 schools

Stuttgart/ Berlin April 4, 2023: From today, 20 schools from all across Germany can cross their fingers for the German School Award 2023. A 41-member-strong jury comprised of educational scientists and administrators, and in-school specialists has selected the schools from 85 applicants. The competition focuses on the quality of teaching and how schools can best design teaching and learning for their students.


Over the coming weeks, teams of judges will assess the top 20 schools, interviewing teachers, students, parents and extracurricular partners on site and visiting classrooms and projects. Once the school visits are complete, the selection committee will nominate up to 15 schools for the German School Award 2022 at the beginning of July. 

The shortlisted schools will be invited to an award ceremony on October 12, 2023 in Berlin with Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and other guests, including ARD Chairman Kai Gniffke, where the coveted prizes will finally be awarded. 
The main award is endowed with 100,000 euros, the five other prizes with a total of more than 100,000 euros. All of the nominated schools who miss out on the main prizes will still receive a 5,000 euro recognition award. 
 

The German School Award 

Celebrating the best schools in the country, the German School Award has been awarded by Robert Bosch Stiftung GmbH and the Heidehof Foundation since 2006 and is the best-known, most demanding, and highest-value prize in the field. The Award is partnered with the public broadcasting network ARD and the German publishing group die ZEIT.
Around 2,500 different schools have applied for the prize since the program was launched. The winner is decided by the jury, who consider six quality criteria: “quality of instruction”, “academic achievement”, “approach to diversity”, “responsibility”, “school culture, life, and extracurricular partners”, and “school development”. These characteristics are now broadly recognized as the hallmarks of a quality school.
The approaches adopted by the award-winning schools are then evaluated and processed before being made available to all schools through training courses, publications, and the online platform “The German School Portal”. This is a cycle for consolidating and sharing good school practice.
