About

ADD (Action on Disability and Development) International supports disability justice organisations and activists with funding and leadership skills to build powerful movements for change. ADD International is a participatory-grant maker for disability justice and exists to increase the flow of funding direct to activists.

ADD’s vision is for a world in which ableism no longer exists and disabled people can fully participate in society. Their mission is to strengthen disability justice activists and organizations through resourcing and leadership skills. ADD works in solidarity with disability justice movements. The organization aims to ensure that resources and opportunities flow to disability justice movements in Africa and Asia.

The project is funded under the program "Support for the disability movement" (Disability Justice).

Why do we support ADD?

Disabled people make up 16% of the world’s population. Due to the intersecting systems of oppression that exist in most societies, disabled people face some of the worst levels of discrimination, injustice, and threat on the planet and are amongst the most marginalized people in the world: Girls and women with disabilities in particular experience higher levels of gender-based violence. Disabled women are marginalized both in the women's rights movement and in the movement for the rights of people with disabilities. Young people with disabilities face barriers to fully participating in society. They are often overlooked within human rights organizations and movements, including disability, women’s and youth movements. Not all disabilities are equally recognized, and not all resources are equally available. This means that people with certain types of disabilities face additional barriers even within the disability organization's space. Crises such as war and climate change also continue to have a disproportionate impact on people with disabilities.

What is the goal?

In the next ten years, ADD will work on the following key strategic priorities:

  • Resource disability justice activism through participatory grant-making.
  • Nourish movements, encouraging collective solidarity and strength.
  • Nurture leaders through ADD’s Global Disability Leadership Academy.
  • Influence funders for fairer funding to support disability justice movements.
  • Transform ADD by modeling the change thy want to see in the world within their own organization.
How does it work?

ADD resources disability justice activism through participatory grant-making. Funding is prioritized for the most disadvantaged groups, starting with young people, girls and women with disabilities. Grants are as flexible as possible to allow disability justice activists to set their own agenda and develop their own approaches.
