Survey of teachers

The German School Barometer Teachers is an annual representative survey of teachers at general and vocational schools in Germany. From 2024, we will observe this group of school stakeholders on an annual longitudinal basis (panel survey) on various topics: current challenges and the most urgent needs at their own school, the experience of stress and professional satisfaction, how schools deal with heterogeneity and digitalization, as well as training courses attended, the feedback culture and cooperation within the teaching staff.

In past surveys, we have addressed various current topics. In June 2023, teachers were more likely to notice signs of child poverty among their pupils and a majority would increase their working hours if certain reforms were introduced. In April 2022, it became clear that the majority of teachers are suffering from emotional exhaustion and have observed a significant increase in behavioral problems among their students as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Biggest Challenges, Personal Stress, and Attitudes Toward Civic Education, AI, and Diversity

As of June 2025, teachers in Germany view the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom with skepticism. While most expect it to have predominantly negative effects on their students, they also recognize its potential for personalized learning. An increasing number of teachers now cite student behavior as the greatest challenge in their daily work. For the first time, the 2025 German School Barometer also explores how teachers perceive civic education in schools. The result: More than half believe that significantly more needs to be done in this area.

Selbstbestimmtes Lernen heißt, Schülerinnen und Schülern zuzutrauen, dass sie eigene Wege wählen dürfen, und sie gleichzeitig darin zu begleiten, diese Wege zu reflektieren.
