War on Want
About the project
War on Want builds and connects powerful national, regional and global movements for a just transition to tackle the interconnected crises of climate and inequality. The post-Covid-pandemic context and the intensification of geopolitical conflicts over recent years have highlighted the deep inequalities that are entrenched in our social fabric and exposed the fragile nature of our systems, such as social security, health care and workers' rights. In recent years, many people across the globe have been affected by rising inequality, worsening of workers’ rights, and shrinking civic space for movement action. These developments are all deeply interconnected with the climate crisis.
War on Want believes a better world is possible. The Robert Bosch Stiftung supports War on Want in working towards a just transition and a Global Green New Deal that guarantees the rights of everyone to live with dignity. This requires tackling the systemic causes of poverty, inequality, injustice and ecological breakdown. A Global Green New Deal involves thinking beyond national borders to address multiple, overlapping social and ecological emergencies like the continuous attacks on workers’ rights, the burden of unsustainable national debt and the continuous unrestricted extraction of critical minerals in the so-called Global South to sustain the North’s consumption demands. War on Want works in partnership with grassroots social movements, trade unions and civil society organizations in the so-called Global South and across the world to strengthen their collective ability to promote alternative visions and solutions. Together, they have developed four key tests that should underpin any intervention:
- keeping global warming below 1.5°C
- thriving within planetary boundaries
- undoing historical injustice and inequality
- and building a society focused on care and repair.
To pass these tests, it is crucial to build cross-movement power, work to develop coherent policy agendas, foster participation, and pursue engagement of diverse stakeholders at national and multilateral levels.
Why are we supporting War on Want?
Inequalities such as the exploitation of workers in the Global South and the increasing wealth gaps are intertwined with many issues like unequal exchanges on tax, debt and trade. These need to be addressed through a just, equal and ecological transition pathway, where solutions are developed together with communities affected by these inequalities. War on Want works in solidarity with organizations and social movements across the globe, to shift the narratives in the Global North and to strengthen Global South movements’ own internal narratives around cross-movement solutions and agendas.
What is the aim?
The Robert Bosch Stiftung supports social movements and organizations, including War on Want, to collectively navigate policy issues, tensions and strategies and recognize the interconnection of their work. This lays the foundation for a just transition.
How does it work?
War on Want creates engaging, accessible political education materials for its members, supporters and social media followers to better understand the interconnected issues within their Global Green New Deal framework and Just Transition work. They develop reports, briefings and other public communications that are easier to digest, and provide engaging and accessible political education, without losing or shying away from the complexity of the crises. War on Want organizes in-person public events and host online educational events such as movement building webinars and panels focused on promoting civic organizing and increasing their supporters’ access to policy analysis. For many years, War on Want has a worked in partnership with frontline communities in the Global South. Although War on Want does not have a ground presence, the partnership model aims at building trust and developing strong relations with partners – one that not only supports their resource mobilization efforts but that advocates and amplifies their voices and demands in the UK and Europe and in multilateral spaces.
