Unpacking Structural and Institutional Racism in 8 EU Member States

Bücher und Studien
2024
Struktureller und institutioneller Rassismus in 8 EU-Mitgliedstaaten

The study, funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung, reveals the deep patterns of structural and institutional racism in eight EU countries. It shows that discrimination is not the exception, but is deeply embedded in our social, economic and political foundations. Conscious efforts are needed at national and European level to promote justice and equality and to overcome old systems. The authors make policy recommendations on how to empower historically disadvantaged communities and create environments that enable diversity and participation.

Repchance Europe (Englisch)

The recent study REPCHANCE Europe, funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung, highlights the under-representation of migrant MPs in Europe's national parliaments. In Germany, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the UK, these MPs remain significantly less represented than their proportion of the population. Despite slow progress and increased political ambition, systemic and personal barriers remain. As well as highlighting the marginal progress made in different countries, the study offers concrete policy recommendations on how to ensure fair political representation. The study is a call for reform and describes how a diverse political landscape can contribute to strengthening democracy.

(K)ein Kunststück

In our immigrant society, people are still discriminated against and excluded from equal participation on the basis of their origin, culture or religion. The arts and culture sector is no exception. As part of the "(K)ein Kunststück" project, the Anne Frank Educational Center, funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung, provided intensive support and advice to five selected art and cultural institutions over a period of one and a half years. The goal was to promote and sustainably strengthen diversity and anti-discrimination work in the cultural sector. With this brochure, we would like to offer insights, advice, and reflections on the challenges and conditions for success to all those who would like to embark on such a journey or who are already in the midst of it. The “common we” in rural areas

Das "gemeinsame Wir" in ländlichen Räumen

Social cohesion is a much used term in current political and social debates and is referred to as "the basis for coexistence in an open, democratically constituted state".
in an open, democratically constituted state". At the same time, it seems to be under pressure in supposedly increasingly polarized societies. This
This pressure is attributed by many actors, at least in part, to migration processes. However, the (assumed) relationships between migration, social cohesion and democracy often remain unclear. Without a clear understanding of these relationships, it is not possible to take appropriate policy measures to strengthen cohesion. This discussion paper therefore attempts to provide an initial orientation to the debate and to identify specific areas for further work. (German text only)

In search of the socially just 1.5 degree target

Auf der Suche nach dem sozialen 1,5 Grad Ziel

denkhausbremen is publishing a catalogue of demands for a socially just and ecologically sustainable future. What is special about it is that the document focuses on the ideas of 25 initiatives throughout Germany in which people on a “small budget” represent themselves. The demands therefore reflect the perspectives of people who are dependent on state transfer payments, have a disability or illness that limits them, have a migration background or are homeless. The catalog is the result of a journey through Germany that has lasted several years and is a forceful appeal to shape the future together and inclusively. (In German language only)

This policy brief and recommendations outline the necessary steps for decision-makers to address structural and institutional racism effectively. It advocates for both national and EU decision-makers to champion these efforts, fostering a united and proactive response to promote equality and justice for all.

Opportunities instead of ‘crisis’

Bücher und Studien
Chancen statt "Krise"

The coronavirus pandemic was followed by Russia's attack on Ukraine, and since then almost 1.2 million people have arrived in Germany from Ukraine - in addition to those who have migrated via the regular asylum system. At the same time, personnel and financial bottlenecks in local authorities are becoming more apparent: problems such as a lack of housing or insufficient childcare are putting local administrations under pressure. How can municipalities develop resilience in the face of these multiple challenges? Between May 2023 and March 2024, DeZIM explored this question together with 11 municipalities, highlighting best practice and making recommendations for action in the report. (German only)

The practical guide is aimed at local actors from politics, administration and welfare organisations as well as religious and cultural initiatives who are committed to shaping a peaceful society.
